NIA searches Saokat Molla’s home and party office, son questioned in Bhangar blast case
The Opposition on Tuesday submitted a no-confidence motion seeking the removal of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, escalating its confrontation with the Chair amid repeated disruptions in the House. The notice, carrying 118 signatures, was submitted to the Lok Sabha Secretary General by Congress leaders.
The resolution, moved under constitutional provisions, alleges that the Speaker has conducted proceedings in a “blatantly partisan manner” and repeatedly denied Opposition leaders the opportunity to speak. It cites instances where speeches were curtailed during key debates and points to the suspension of several Opposition MPs as evidence of bias.
The move comes against the backdrop of a prolonged logjam in the Lok Sabha, with Opposition benches demanding discussions on multiple issues and alleging that democratic norms were being undermined. Efforts by the Speaker to break the deadlock through meetings with leaders from both sides have failed to restore normal functioning.
While the motion has support from several Opposition parties, the Trinamool Congress did not sign the notice. TMC leaders said they had suggested giving the Speaker time to respond to Opposition demands before moving a no-confidence motion, and opted out when the notice was submitted immediately.
Parliament has witnessed repeated adjournments and heated exchanges in recent days, with tensions peaking after allegations that security and decorum inside the House were at risk. The Opposition has rejected these claims, maintaining that its protests are within parliamentary norms.
